My Twelve Favorite Halloween Movies

1)      The Legend of Hell House (1973)

My favorite movie to be played at the end of the evening on the 31st. I can’t imagine Halloween without this movie.

2)      La Maschera del Demonio (1960) aka Black Sunday

Starring the lovely and mysterious Barbara Steele. Oh, those penetrating doe eyes of hers! Tied with The Legend of Hell House and Vampyros Lesbos as my favorite movies of all time.

3)      The Tomb of Ligeia (1964)

This is a good one to watch whilst baking the Halloween cupcakes.

4)      I Tre Volti Della Paura (1963) aka Black Sabbath

I’ve been known to watch The Telephone segment over and over and over….

5)      Pumpkinhead (1988)

What is it about Pumpkinhead that makes me want to cuddle… Pumpkinhead?

6)      Lo Spettro (1963) aka The Ghost

Also starring Barbara Steele. I think to really appreciate this movie one must have previously seen The Horrible Doctor Hichcock (1962). Cynthia Hichcock’s truly mortifying and disturbing predicament with her sadistic husband in the first movie makes her seem much more innocent and justified in The Ghost. Incidentally, the events in this film take place in 1885, which explains Mrs. Hichcock’s fabulous updos.

7)      The Changeling (1980)

“Did you die in this house, Joseph?”

8)      Suspiria (1977)

Actually scary… or at least disturbing.

9)      Operazione Paura (1966) aka Kill, Baby… Kill!

This movie was my introduction to Mario Bava, who just so happens to be my most favorite director of all time, ever, ever, ever.

10)    Mary Reilly (1996)

“He came out of the dark… like he was made of it.” When I heard this line I hoped that someday I would marry a man who fit that description… and I did.

11)    The Haunted Palace (1963)

I heart Roger Corman. He created the crème de la crème of American made 60’s horror films in my humble opinion.

12)    House of Usher (1960)

“RoooodeeerICK!!!!!” The paintings of Roderick Usher’s family in this movie are to die for, and if nothing else, watch this movie simply because it is a veritable ballet of color for the eyes.
